Portugal Get €25.5m For Winning Euro Title

Portugal defeated France in the final of 2016 European Championship to win their first ever major international tournament, and won €25.5 million in prize money, while runners-up France get €23.5 million.

A breakdown of Portugal winning showed that the team got €8 million for qualifying for the tournament, while €1.5 million accrued to them for the three group matches drawn. A team gets €1 million for a group game won and half the amount for every drawn game.
Portugal earned €1.5 million for reaching the Roung of 16, while for reaching the quarter-final, €2.5 million was their reward. For qualifying for the semi-final, €4 million was their reward, while €8 was what they won for winning the title.
It is the summation of these various wins that accrued to €25.5 million total prize money. Had Portugal won all its group matches, they would have won €27 million.
France €23.5 million was made up of the two group games won and a draw which amounted to €2.5 million. They got €1.5 million for reaching the Round of 16, additional €2.5 million for qualifying for the quarter-finals and €4 million for qualifying for the semis. Losing the final game gave France additional €5 million and €8 for qualifying for the tournament. The addition of these wins totaled €23.5 million.
Wales total prize money is €18 million. Wales got €2 million for winning two group matches, €1.5 for reaching the Round of 16, €2.5 for quarter-final and €4 million for reaching the semis.
Germany got €18.5 million for crashing out at the semi-final stage. The difference between Germany and Wales is that Germany won two group games and drew one while Wales won two and lost one.
The total prize money pool was about €301 million which was distributed among 24 national teams. This was more than 50 per cent increase on the previous prize money of €194 million awarded in 2012 edition that held in Poland/Ukraine.
