Around 80 minutes into the game, with Northern Ireland leading 1-0, a call for help was made and a response team scrambled to the Northern Ireland stand
A Northern Ireland fan has collapsed and died at the Euro 2016 match against Ukraine tonight.
Around 80 minutes into the game, with Northern Ireland leading 1-0, a call for help was made and a response team scrambled to the Northern Ireland stand.
Blankets were put in place to cover the fan who collapsed at his seat, reports Belfast Live.
The man, in his sixties, collapsed in the upper part of the ground and was treated by paramedics but they were unable to revive him.
Before his death was reported one fan at the match tweeted said: "It looks like someone is being resuscitated at the back of Northern Ireland stand."
The fan has not been named as yet.
The Irish FA released a statement saying: "The Irish Football Association is deeply saddened to learn of the sudden death of a Northern Ireland fan at this evening’s game at Stade de Lyon."
Irish FA Chief Executive Patrick Nelson added: “The fan passed away as he was watching the game in the stadium. This puts any result of a football match into perspective.
“The thoughts of the board, management, players and staff are with his family and friends at this sad time.”
