Arsenal have made an approach to sign Bayern Munich defender Mehdi Benatia, according to reports.
Wenger is reportedly interested in strengthening his defense this summer and the French man is said to be looking for a quality centre back to pair with Laurent Koscielny next season.
Wenger has been keeping tabs on Benatia’s situation at Bayern since the German club confirmed the potential arrival of Matt Hummels and now Foot Mercato via Football Transfer Tavern claims the Gunners are set to table a mouthwatering bid for Benatia.
Fresh from the signing of Granit Xhaka to shore up the midfield, Wenger would now look to strengthen the defense and Benatia ticks all the boxes for the Frenchman as a solid ball playing centre back.
Although talks between Bayern and Arsenal are far from an advanced stage, initial contacts have been made as Wenger prepares to make an official bid.
Benatia didn’t have the best season at Bayern due to injuries which resulted to poor form when fit but the 29 year old is still rated as one of the best defenders in Europe.
Benatia joined bayern for the fee of €26m in 2014 and would likely be moved on for a lower fee this summer with Roma and Juventus also monitoring the defender’s situation.
