Argentina international Ricardo Alvarez has joined Sampdoria from Inter Milan following an unsuccessful loan spell in the Premier League with Sunderland.
Alvarez joined Sunderland on a season-long loan from Inter in September 2014 but his spell at the Stadium of Light was hampered by injuries as he made just five starts.
"President Massimo Ferrero is happy to announce Ricardo Gabriel Alvarez is now officially a Sampdoria player and has signed a contract which expires on June 30 2016," said a Sampdoria statement.
Alvarez joins in time for the city derby away to Genoa on Tuesday, bringing to an end a period of uncertainty about his future.
The 27-year-old, who has not played since undergoing knee surgery in the summer, returned to Italy at the end of last season when Sunderland ruled out signing him on a permanent deal, sparking a row between the two clubs.
Inter claimed they were owed £7.5m under conditions of the loan arraignment while the Black Cats insisted the Serie A side breached the terms of the contract by not allowing Alvarez to undergo surgery.
FIFA is due to rule on the dispute but has yet to announce a date.
