Manchester United let two leads slip away and settled for a 3-3 draw at Newcastle at St James' Park on Tuesday.
Newcastle fought back from two goals down to level the score, and though Wayne Rooney's second goal of the day put United ahead on 79 minutes, the hosts equalised again late on through Paul Dummett's deflected shot.
United were given an early penalty when Marouane Fellaini headed the ball into Chancel Mbemba's raised arm, and Rooney converted from the spot on nine minutes.
Rooney continued to look dangerous as he missed just wide of the goal in the 27th minute, though Newcastle nearly equalised immediately afterwards, only for David De Gea to make a smart save with his leg.
Newcastle then had a penalty shout waved away as Jesse Lingard made a sliding tackle on 32 minutes.
Six minutes later, Rooney was again the focus as he held the ball up and passed to Lingard on the overlap, and the 23-year-old scored his second league goal of the season from a tight angle to make it 2-0.
But Newcastle had a goal back three minutes before the break as Aleksandar Mitrovic headed down for Georginio Wijnaldum's to lash home from the centre of the box.
After the break, Lingard had a glorous chance to restore United's two-goal lead but skied over the bar with the goal gaping.
And Newcastle made United pay by drawing level on 67 minutes through a Mitrovic penalty. The Serbian drew the spot-kick when Chris Smalling drove him into the ground while marking him on a corner.
United appeared rattled and Matteo Darmian gave the ball away deep in his own half, but Newcastle's would-be go-ahead goal was rightly ruled offside.
But Rooney put the visitors ahead with his second goal of the game on 79 minutes with a curling effort.
However, Newcastle were not finished and levelled the score again in the 90th minute when the ball fell to left-back Dummett to take a shot that took a large deflection off of Smalling's arm and into the net.
